Discovering Dumaguete

The island of Negros, in Western Visayas is divided into two provinces: Negros Occidental in the Northwest with Bacolod as its capital, and Negros Oriental in the southeast with Dumaguete as its capital. The largest sugarcane plantations are found in Negros, which is one of the worlds leading producers. This is also the reason why Negros was nicknamed Sugar Island. In the south of the island, the Tablas Plateau offers incomparable landscapes, thanks in particular to the Twin Lakes and the Casaroro Waterfalls. We appreciate the coast that leads to  these incredible treasures. The delicate white sandy beaches along the west coast contrast with the small coves with dark sand on the east coast.  It is highly recommended to spend a day in the hinterland of Dumaguete, a region that is both mountainous and volcanic, with numerous lakes and impressive waterfalls.  From Dumaguete, you need to head towards Sibulan, then leave the coastal road to climb up to the Twin Lakes at around 900 meters above sea level. These lakes are ancient craters. Along the way, you will be able to admire typical landscapes made of rice fields, coconut trees, volcanoes, and beaches. The Balinsasayao park is a protected nature reserve with diverse wildlife and flowers. It is possible to cross the first lake by boat or simply walk around it to cross the jungle for 900 meters. It’s not a long walk, but under this tropical climate, expect a good sweat. On the other side, a tall turret allows you to admire the two lakes.  You’ll then retrace your steps for lunch at the Azalea Restaurant, a traditional restaurant that offers breathtaking views of the Tañon strait and the valley just below (or simply above the Twin Lakes).  After lunch, it will be time to hit the road again towards Valencia to discover the PulangBato Falls and their ferrous waters coming from Mount Talinis, the highest point in the province. You can cool off under the falls and in a pool filled with spring water. Before heading back to Dumaguete, make a stop a little further down, where you can enjoy the hot springs. Negros is one of the four regions in the Philippines that harness geothermal energy. The local power plant produces and provides enough electricity for the city and even neighboring regions.  Do you know Dumaguete and its surroundings? If not, contact us to discover this region.

The Ascent of Pinatubo

Mount Pinatubo is one of the most famous volcanoes in the Philippines. Located about 100 km northwest of Manila, it is considered extinct, its sides covered with rainforest and inhabited by the Aetas. The word pinatubo can mean “fertile place where crops can be grown”, or “grown”. There is a local oral tradition that suggests a popular memory of previous large eruptions. An ancient legend tells of Bacobaco, a terrible spirit of the sea, who could metamorphose into a huge turtle and throw fire out of his mouth. Its largest eruption dates from June 1991, after 500 years of dormancy, one of the most violent on the planet in the twentieth century. It has caused great upheavals in the region, especially in terms of fauna and flora, a massive evacuation of the population, as well as a considerable loss of altitude of the mountain which now rises to 1486m. It now serves as an asset for the region as it attracts numerous tourists eager to admire its crater lake. To reach it, you must first embark from Capas, a small village at the foot of the volcano, in 1970s Land Cruisers that will take you to the beginning of the hiking trail in about 1 hour and 30 minutes. This 4×4 stage is mandatory as there are no roads to access the area. To reach the summit and the crater lake, you need to hike for another 1.5 hours. The descent follows the same path back to the starting point. After climbing the mountain, you can relax and enjoy various activities offered on your return. On the way back, it is possible to stop by a lake. Additionally, Mount Pinatubo is part of a chain of volcanoes that stretches along the west side of the island of Luzon, known as the Zambales Mountains. It stands at a height of 4,757 meters and is nestled exactly between Zambales and Pampanga, making it an ideal destination for weekend adventures such as hiking near Manila. You have the option to reach its starting point in Capas, Tarlac, just a few hours from the capital of the Philippines. Have you ever climbed Mount Pinatubo? If not, feel free to contact us to plan your adventure.
